The 1st July marks the unveiling of the Sliema weathervane which the The Rubberbodies Collective will be donating to the community as part of the project il-Warda tar-Riħ (The Windrose Project) which is part of the Valletta 2018 cultural programme.
Winds Bring Gifts Ashore consists of an intimate performance at Exiles beach at 7.30pm, which will lead to the unveiling of the weathervane by Sliema Mayor Anthony Chircop.
A traditional kite-making workshop is also being organised, during which participants can create and fly a traditional Maltese kite. Members of the public are invited to join in and fly their own kites.
The Sliema weathervane boasts the form of the perennial saddled bream, or kaħlija, which has long captured the imagination of fishermen. The design was inspired following discussions with Leli Camilleri, the President of the Għaqda tas-Sajjieda Dilettanti, and the Sliema Mayor.
Il-Warda tar-Riħ revolves around four compass points on the Maltese islands – Sliema, Mġarr (Malta), Għarb and Marsaxlokk, which become the focus for community activities, story gathering, workshops and creative events, acknowledging the historical, mythological and living presence of the winds and their importance in Mediterranean culture.
