Artists from Malta, France and Japan team up to bring audiences exciting new hip hop performances that break genre conventions. The Hip Hop Weekend, culminating on the 1st and 2nd December at the City Theatre in Valletta, also includes Open Art Surgery, which consisted of a week of mentoring workshops with the legendary Artistic Director of Breakin’ Convention, Jonzi D! The weekend will involve the participation of dancers who participated in our open call for participation for Open Art Surgery.
Programme:
1st December, 10.30am, Dance College Studios, Imsida: Dance workshop for kids aged 8-16 with Salah: Popping, Animation, Boogaloo and Effects. Salah is a master popper, locker, B-boy and all round entertainer who has won titles as a B-boy with Vagabonds Crew and became the solo popping world champion at the UK B-boy Championships in 2016. He has worked with Cirque du Soleil, Puma & David Blaine to bring his unique style and energy to millions. This workshop will teach participants Salah’s unique approach to dance and his interpretation of popping, which he calls PABE (Popping, Animation, Boogaloo, Effects). Triple Bill; 1st December, City Theatre, Valletta, 8pm:
Triple bill hip-hop theatre performance with Kentaro!! (Japan), Jonzi-D (UK/Sadler’s Wells) and Cheryl Lofreda (Malta) with Plato’s Dream Machine (Malta).
Open Art Surgery; 2nd December, City Theatre, Valletta, 7pm:
Variety group show of hip-hop theatre wih Ivan Blackstock (UK), Salah (France), Open Art Surgery workshop participants (Street Elements, Christian Cali, Sarah Kurvinen, Warren Bonello, Sarah Kurvinen with Stuart Vella, Dave Duong) and Jonzi-D as emcee. Jonzi will invite the audience to question and critique the brand new work shown, giving audience members the opportunity to get inside the minds of the artists, and giving artists themselves the unique opportunity to question their audience. Work that has appeared at Open Art Surgery has gone on to be performed at The Place, Just Jam, Edinburgh Fringe and nationally and internationally as part of the Breakin’ Convention International Festival of Hip Hop Dance Theatre.
