HSBC Malta and the Ministry for Energy and Health have joined forces to create a programme of events to commemorate the 400-year anniversary of water reaching Valletta via the Wignacourt Aqueduct.

On Monday 20th April, an exhibition will be held at the HSBC Head Office in Valletta which features various documents relating to the aqueduct. These documents are being sourced from the National Library and Heritage Malta, the latter of which is also helping out with the set-up of the exhibition. The exhibit opens on the 20th April and is for invited guests only but will be open to the general public and school children from the 21st onwards.

On Tuesday 21st April, a special treat is planned for school children from all around Malta and Gozo. School children are invited to attend a re-enactment of ceremonies that welcomed the arrival of water in Valletta. These ceremonies will take place at Pjazza San Gorg and are being organised in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority. The Education Dept’s Drama Unit will also be organising re-enactments along Republic Street.

On Wednesday 22nd April, a workshop will be held at the Casino Maltese at 9.30am. This workshop is being organised by the HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop Campaign, SEWCU, in collaboration with the Valletta 2018 Foundation. This workshop, containing four speakers, will address the hyrdrological, historical and social impacts relating to the construction of the aqueduct.
