BLITZ, the only artist-run contemporary art space in Valletta has launched a crowdfunding kickstarter campaign titled ‘MAKE US COUNT’ to develop its space further. If the funding goal is reached, two important long-term projects—‘Project Space’ and ‘Reside’ — will be given the green light.
‘Project Space’ is a space reserved for a high-turnaround exhibition programme. It will provide a platform for experimental practitioners who are constantly challenging what constitutes art nowadays.
‘Reside’ – is a residency programme, created and designed by architecture students from the University of Malta, and supported by the 808 Foundation. Funds will help complete a half-finished, self-contained apartment that would house international artists that would be invited to share their talent with the local scene.
With any crowdfunding campaign, it is all or nothing, meaning if BLITZ doesn’t reach their goal they won’t receive a single penny. People can pledge anything from €7 to €5000 and the amount will only be withdrawn from their account if the goal is reached. To pledge, please visit www.makesuscount.com – but please note that the deadline for crowdfunding is 1st July. Those who wish to pledge will get rewards depending on the amount pledged. The rewards are made by local artists who have created and produced limited edition art exclusively for BLITZ. Artists include: Sarah Maria Scicluna, Sef Farrugia, Violet Kulewska, Seb Tanti Burlo’, Alexandra Pace and Kane Cali.
‘MAKE US COUNT’ has also been selected by Art Basel’s independent jury as a featured project in its crowdfunding initiative. This Art Basel and Kickstarter joint initiative has helped many non-commercial art projects financially in a time when funds for non-profit visual arts organisation are decreasing. Art Basel also brings various leading galleries from around the world together during three annual events held in Basel, Miami Beach and Hong Kong. Other than showcasing works by well-known artists, Art Basel also offers a platform for new artists to break out into the art world.
Currently, BLITZ is hosting the ‘NEW WEAPONS’ exhibition, which the Valletta 2018 Foundation has collaborated on. This exhibition will run till the 21st June 2015. Valletta 2018 has also collaborated with BLITZ on the ‘Hey Disco!’ event.
