Constellation Malta- Call for Artists’ Assistants
Valletta 2018 is collaborating with former Venice Biennale curator, Ms Rosa Martinez, to launch an intriguing multi-site closing exhibition within heritage sites all over the Maltese Islands, titled CONSTELLATION MALTA.
Constellation Malta proposes a series of artistic interventions placed within heritage sites throughout the Maltese archipelago, to create fruitful dialogues between historical heritage, popular culture and contemporary art.
This call for Artists’ Assistants is an opportunity for individuals who wish to contribute their skills to a talented team in a challenging and rewarding manner. Reporting to the Production Manager, the selected persons will be responsible for assisting the artist Chiharu Shiota (The Key in the Hand, 2015) on site and interact in a direct manner, learning from her expertise.
The Artists Assistants must have an interest in art and heritage, with a desire to understand and internalize the mission, purpose and values of Constellation Malta, as well as the ethos of the artist’s installation.
The selected assistants will need to have the following skills:
- a basic understanding of craftsmanship / DIY
- any experience in stage/prop/ artistic setups would be considered an asset
- an eye for detail: mounting, light manual lifting, painting, drilling, hanging and threading pieces of string together, measuring etc.
- must not be afraid to work from certain heights (walking along a one storey scaffolding platform) if necessary adhering to all health and safety regulations.
- comfortable working in a team-oriented environment
- must be ready to work 8 hour shifts (including late shifts if necessary).
The selected persons will need to take instructions from the artist or her crew directly in the English language and be available to assist during the month of September, but more specifically between 1st October and 11th October (both days included).
As places are limited, assistants selected might also be asked to assist other artists working in various locations pertaining to Constellation Malta. This is therefore the ideal opportunity for students, recent graduates or anyone with a keen interest in the arts who want to be in the chance of working with several prestigious artists within heritage sites.
This experience will give participants the opportunity to not only learn about the artistic scene in Malta through hands-on experience, but also to network with persons working within the field both locally and abroad.
The selected assistants will be working on a contract for service basis and must be registered with the VAT department.
Kindly submit your CV and tell us why you wish to form part of the artist’s team at [email protected] by no later than Tuesday 31st July, noon. Selected applicants will be notified towards the end of August.
