Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar – FAA is organising a series of cultural events during the month of May to commemorate the 450th Anniversary of the Great Siege of 1565.
On the 16th May, a seminar addressing the depictions of the Great Siege in Matteo Perez D’Aleccio’s Frescoes will feature discussion by leading experts in the field. The panel includes Dr Theresa Vella, Dr Stephen C. Spiteri, Prof. Denis de Lucca, Dr Albert Ganado, Dr Emanuel Buttigieg, Mr Joseph Schirò and Mr Dane Munro. This seminar will be held at St. John’s Cavalier at 8.30am.
From the 19th to the 26th May, an art exhibition by Raymond Rominic Agius will be held at the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry. Titled Interpretation of the Great Siege and endorsed by the Valletta 2018 Foundation, the exhibition will showcase paintings that took inspiration from the historical writings of Dr Stephen C. Spiteri.
Re-enactments of the Great Siege will also be held on the 23rd May, in collaboration with the Birgu Local Council. Those attending will be given the opportunity to step back into the past once by means of a walking tour departing from Valletta. The walking tour will then lead to a boat tour to Birgu via a traditional harbour boat where people will visit both major and unfamiliar Great Siege sites.
A public talk on Is-Swar ta d’Aleccio – bejn arti u realtà will be delivered in Malta by Dr Stephen C. Spiteri. Organised in collaboration with The Lodge and the the Cospicua Local council, this talk will be held at the Lodge and will deal with the topic of a 16th century residence built by a mysterious knight of the Order of St. John.
