Following the selection of two playwrights for Get Your Act Together, a two-year project spearheaded by More or Less Theatre and supported by the Valletta 2018 Foundation and the Malta Arts Fund within Arts Council Malta, a public reading of the two plays chosen will be held on the 29th September 2017 at the Spazju Kreattiv Theatre, from 7:30pm onwards, during this year’s edition of Science in the City. Get Your Act Together is aimed at teaching theatre skills, tackling difficult subjects, based on information from professionals, both in academia and theatre.
The two plays chosen are by Gianni Selvaggi and Lizzie Eldrige, and are based on the themes of island life and cabin fever. Both plays will be followed by a discussion on the topics chosen and the play construction itself with the general public, the director, the actors, the writers and the mentors Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón – who has given Ted Talks on combining science with humour and stories; and Domenico Castaldo – who specialises in actor-training. A short introduction will be given by the anthropologist Ms Elise Billiard Pisani on the subject of Island Stories, public spaces and the community.
The plays chosen are called “Do you need a beating Heart” by Lizzie Eldridge, a script dealing with common space and conflict between island communities and urbanisation, suicide and sexual abuse. Lizzie is under the tuition of Mr Sáenz de Cabezón. The second play is called “Your make Lemonade” by Gianni Selvaggi which is a monologue dealing with cancer in men, addiction and mental health. Selvaggi is being mentored by Mr Castaldo.
Please note due to the sensitive nature of these subjects, this event is only suitable for an 18+ audience.
