Corina Van Eijk (Rigoletto, 2003; Gianni Schicchi 2014; La Traviata 2017) of Spanga het Verona van Weststellingwerf (Opera Spanga) directs this open-air reworking of Verdi’s Aida, the much-beloved classic which depicts the trials of the princess Aida and her lover, the military commander of the enemy, Radamès.
This contemporary production is set to reach out to new audiences during Valletta 2018 and Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018, with performances staged in Valletta and the Dutch countryside where the company is based. In-keeping with Valletta 2018’s capacity-building ethos, the prestigious Opera Spanga group is also offering students from MCAST (Malta) and D’Drive (Leeuwarden) opportunities in costume design – under the inspirational guidance of renowned designers Charles&Ron – as well as in the fields of production design and film production. The Maltese Philharmonic Orchestra will be the musical partner for these exciting performances.
