In a series of events titled ‘The Landings of the Magnificent Memories Machine’ as part of the Valletta 2018 Cultural Programme, Magna Żmien presents ‘Landing #5 – Kalkara’.

The Kalkara event kicks off on the 3rd of November 2018 at the Parish Hall in Arċiqsof Gonzi Square, Kalkara, at 7.30pm. This event is happening in collaboration with the Kalkara Parish.

The night will feature a time-machine performance by ‘Armchair Voyager Wistin and  Banda ta’ Memorji Meraviljużi’, a video installation by Tiny Island Studio, and  music by Robert Farrugia.

One of the highlights of this event is an exhibition curated by Charlie Cauchi, which gathers  the photographic work of Emanuel Borg. The full collection of photographs and negatives was digitised by Magna Żmien and a selection of these will be showcased for a week, from the 3rd until the 11th of November, as tribute to Borg’s work.

From the dramatic to the intimate, the catastrophic to the mundane, the work of Emanuel Borg is the focus of this week-long exhibition in Kalkara —the home of the photographer and the backdrop of much of his photography. Some commissioned, some taken for his own pleasure, the majority of the photos featured in this exhibition have, for the most part, not been shared with the public.

The collection, bequeathed to the Magna Żmien project by Emanuel’s son John, spans over 50 years, from the 40s to the early 80s, providing a unique vision of life in those times, not only in Kalkara, but across the islands.

Since its inception, Magna Żmien has been carrying out research with the help of the local councils in various locations , namely Kalkara, Mellieħa, Siġġiewi and Victoria, Gozo, encouraging locals to contribute their memories to the project. People from other localities are encouraged to participate.

Magna Żmien is a movement to collect, convert and make available fading memories through the digitisation of sound and image home collections.

The exhibition showcasing the photographic work by Emanuel Borg will run between the 3rd and 11th November 2018. Opening times of the Parish Hall in Kalkara: 9.30-1pm and 4-9pm. The exhibition closes on the 11th November, 1.30pm.
