Artists from Malta wanted in Wrocław! / #ThinkUrban

Valletta 2018 and the Artist In Residence Programme AIR Wro are jointly announcing an open call for an artist from Malta. The Artist In Residence Programme AIR Wro is a legacy programme of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016. Its main purpose is to support and promote activities of individuals representing various fields of art and culture or are active in border areas between them, interested in cooperating with representatives of local communities and environments as well as eager to build international cultural relations.

We are looking for an artist, curator, animator, activist or researcher from Malta interested in contemporary urban identity and culture and the role of art in creating it, to participate in a residency in Wrocław in October 2017. The resident will be invited to work in the area of one of the most recognisable yards in Wrocław, which is also located in the very heart of the city. The Ruska 46 yard was and still is being redesigned in order to create a space open for all kinds of cultural initiatives, especially those connected with the independent scene and experimental art in public spaces. The yard is also a vivid hub for various organisations and institutions active in culture and art, as well as with regards to social issues, such as minorities and women rights.

Ruska 46 is at the same time located in the so called ‘Four Denominations District’ (‘Four Temples District’ or ‘District of Mutual Respect’), which may be an example of intercultural mediation in practice. It is not a regular, urban district, but an area where the Orthodox Church of Nativity of Theotokos, Roman Catholic Church of St. Anthony of Padua, White Stork Synagogue and Evangelical Church of Divine Providence are placed next to each other. In 2005 these temples were connected with the city’s ‘cultural route’, and the area between them was included in an urban development plan. The ‘district’ is also considered a historical monument. The context of this unique public space will be an added value to the core idea of the resident’s activities.

Applications should include a CV, portfolio (both documents should present the applicant’s education, experience and practice as well as include artist’s statement and latest works) and a cover letter (document should comment on applicant’s intention and ideas as well as present the project). These documents should be prepared in English.

The application and documentation should be sent to the following electronic address: [email protected]

Deadline for application is Monday 24th July 2017. Results will be published on Friday 4th August 2017.
