‘European Eyes on Japan: Japan Today, Volume 20’, Valletta 2018’s photographic exhibition focusing on the experience of two European photographers in Japan, is opening at Spazju Kreattiv from the 31st March.

The exhibition features photography by established local photographer, Alexandra Pace and Dutch photographer, Alice Wielinga. This visual arts project, under the artistic direction of Mikiko Kikuta and curated by Lisa Gwen Baldacchino, has toured more than thirty European Capitals of Culture since 1999. For this project, photographers spend a month living in Japan and documenting their experience there using photography, through a European lens.

The images in this exhibition show two different perspectives of Japanese lifestyle: the every day life of the Japanese, photographed by Pace, and the celebratory aspects of Japanese culture, particularly the Nebuta summer festival, photographed by Wielinga. This captures the essence of the project, which seeks to present different aspects of Japan and the Japanese lifestyle and culture to the public, as seen from the eyes of two European artists.

‘European Eyes on Japan’ is being organised in collaboration with sister European Capital of Culture, Leeuwarden-Fryslận 2018 and the EU-Japan Fest Japan Committee, and is part of the Spazju Kreattiv programme and the VIVA Festival programme. The exhibition will be held between the 31^st of March and the 29^th of April, 2018 at the Spazju Kreattiv Spaces C1-4 in Valletta, after which it will then travel to Leeuwarden and also Japan.
