On Sunday 9th September, more than 12 Manchester United ex-players will be in Malta to play an exhibition match with current local title-holders, Valletta F.C., at the Centenary Stadium in Ta’ Qali.
The match was announced during a press conference earlier today and is being held as part of the European Capital of Culture year.
Manchester United ex-players coming to Malta for this game include Ronny Johnsen, Raimond van der Gouw, Wes Brown, Sammy Mcllroy, Chris Casper, Lee Martin, Bojan Djordjic, Andy Ritchie, Danny Webber, Keith Gillespie, Ben Thornley, Russell Beardsmore and manager Jimmy Greenhoff. These former international football stars were all part of Manchester United at some point between 1971 and 2008, winning many Premier League titles, FA Cups and Champions’ Leagues between them.
Tickets, which can be obtained from the Valletta Football Club or the Manchester United Supporters’ Club, cost only €5, with all proceeds going towards the Ursoline Sisters’ Creche, Angela House in Gwardamangia which works with Maltese children and families in need.
This game coincides with the Manchester United Supporters’ Club’s 60th Anniversary which will be celebrated next February. Hosting an exhibition match in Malta involving a good number of former Manchester United players, many of whom remain active within the club to this very day, is a fitting start to the club’s 60th Anniversary celebrations. The club, which is officially recognised by Manchester United, is the oldest Manchester United Supporters’ Club in the world, being founded and for many years established in St Lucy Street, Valletta.
Addressing the media, Valletta 2018 Chairman Jason Micallef said that this is a wonderful opportunity for football lovers in Malta and the general public alike, with at least three generations of Maltese people who will remember these football stars from their glory days. He said that he is glad that Valletta 2018, together with Valletta F.C. and the Manchester United Supporters’ Club, is able to give back to the Ursoline Sisters who do so much good among our local communities, while promoting the spirit of sportsmanship. All the players will be staying in Valletta where they will experience the European Capital of Culture and other events related to the Valletta 2018 Programme. This event will be marked as part of Valletta 2018’s legacy.
Valletta FC vs Manchester Reds Legends XI Exhibition Match will take place on Sunday 9th September at the Centenary Stadium in Ta’ Qali, kicking off at 6.30pm. €5 tickets may be bought from Valletta F.C. in St Lucy Street, Valletta or from the Manchester United Supporters’ Club in Quarries Square Street, Msida.
