Tomorrow, Giuseppe Verdi’s AIDA reaches Pjazza Teatru Rjal for its first performance. A second performance will be held on Saturday 15th September. Both performances start at 19.30hrs.

As part of the Valletta 2018 programme, Pjazza Teatru Rjal will be charged with the intensity of Verdi’s music, as the open-air theatre hosts Opera Spanga’s contemporary rendition of the much-loved classic, AIDA.

Under the direction of Corina van Eijk, Dutch-based company Opera Spanga is known to inject new life into the medium of opera. The company’s quirky productions, hailing from the tiny village of Spanga, have given operas new levels of meaning, and AIDA promises to do the same… and more!

Opera Spanga will be performing this greatly-acclaimed opera – a highlight of both European Capital of Culture programmes, in Valletta and Leeuwarden-Fryslân – following a successful run in the Netherlands.

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will accompany the stellar cast (which includes Maltese soprano Francesca Aquilina) with a live performance of Verdi’s powerful score, as the enslaved Ethiopian Princess Aida and her star-crossed lover Radamès face the destructive powers of war and hatred. The performance will also showcase the work of MCAST students, who provided hands-on assistance with film production, production design and costume design under the guidance of Maltese/Dutch designer-duo, Charles & Ron.
