The Culture of Ageing Collective Exhibition is a collaborative project between the Valletta 2018 Foundation and Leeuwarden 2018, the two cities that will be hosting the European Capital of Culture for the year 2018, and the Centre for Creativity at St James Cavalier. Curated by Lennard Dost and Mare van Koningsveld, this collective exhibition addresses the concept of ageing through the questioning of the role of seniors within societies while also exploring how do these societies react to an ageing population. The exhibit approaches ageing from a Maltese perspective while also relating this perspective with other cultures. Artists taking part in this exhibition include: Adrian Abela, Michael Apted, Femke Bakker, Kristina Borg, Vince Briffa, Gilbert Calleja, Azahara Cerezo, Libia Castro and Ólafur Ólafsson, Louise Hervé and Chloé Maillet, Bettina Hutschek, Trevin Matcek and Ferhat Özgür.
Although seniors are the subject matter of this interesting exhibition, this does not mean that they are exempt from contributing. They are also actively participate in the project through interviews and an educational programme. This educational programme, titled ‘What’s your secret? /x’inhu s-sigriet tiegħek?’, sees Maltese and Frisian (Dutch) seniors creating visual representations of their secrets on postcards which are then sent to Maltese and Dutch retirement homes. These interviews, which will be carried out by curators Dost and van Koningsveld, joined by Jessica Galea, will also be shown at the exhibition.
