The 25th edition of the Malta Jazz Festival sees local talent and international artists come together to perform the music they love so much – Jazz. The festival promises to be a treat for any lover of Jazz – be you a lay fan or a devout aficionado. The Malta Jazz Festival will be taking place from the 16th till the 19th July, with the 19th being Commonwealth Jazz Day, supported by CHOGM Malta 2015.
Under the direction of Artistic Drector Sandro Zerafa, the year’s festival features an array of Grammy award winners such as 5 time Grammy award winning Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes, as well as Danilo Perez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade, collectively known as the ‘Children of Light’. Other Grammy award winners include bass legend Dave Holland and jazz singer Kurt Elling. Other talented artists that will be performing at the Malta Jazz Festival include the immensely talented saxophone player Chris Potter, guitarist Lionel Loueke, drummer Eric Harland, guitarist Joe Cohn and pianist Yutaka Shiina.
The first edition of “The Fringe” Youth Jazz ensemble will also feature in the Malta Jazz Festival. The Ensemble is part of the Jazz on the Fringe initiative, an initiative which is supported by the Valletta 2018 Foundation and which features in the Foundation’s Cultural Programme. The ensemble will perform under the direction of saxophonist Gabriele Comeglio and Claudio Angeleri, director of the Centro Didattico Produzione Musica (CDPM) – both will also be teaching at the Summer Jazz Camp.
This year’s programme includes gigs around the island as part of Jazz on the Fringe, free masterclasses for the Malta Summer Jazz Camp and a competition for young up-and-coming Jazz musicians through the Malta Jazz content.
